Let's Not Cry When They Are Around..
"Are you sure you can take a picture of that thing? I mean the horse might not like the flash..." Frank trailed off. "Don't worry! Arion loves his picture being taken, so he won't do anything but pose." Hazel giggled. "And he's not a 'thing', Frank, he's a him." (x) ...Because Frank Zhang and Hazel Levesque is a pure awesomeness. I've just finished The Son of Neptune, and the first thing that struck me while I read it was how similiar it felt to The Lost Hero. And I don't mean that the setting (CHB) were similar, or that the characters were similiar. Well yes there is Percy, but that's not the problem. No, actually, I forgot about the setting of The Lost Hero until I was almost finished with The Son of Neptune. Instead, what struck me as being most similiar about these books was that they shared and invoked the same feeling while reading. In this case, Frank and Hazel. Frank and Hazel are not like Jason and Piper. They are both slow, but at a relaxing pace. However, Jason/Piper makes you a little sleepy and content; Frank/Hazel makes you smile, and they keep you engaged in the same actions of friendship. It's always fascinating to see what they'll pull out next.
Frank the clumsy and Hazel the outgoing; they all present new challenges that must be overcome, and they tug the reader along just as well they do to Percy. It's the guidance of the ecxitable yet ultimately level-headed relationship rather than the flightly, clumsy movements of Jason and Piper that make Frank and Hazel different. But that doesn't make Jason and Piper bad, after all Hera took most of Jason's memories and they put the reader into a calm mood. They're still my favorite, but not as much as Frank and Hazel right now.
Frank's character was powerful, it was more deep than I expected. For someone that discovered the history of his family, it was amazing how much he managed to draw the reader in not as someone who was reading a certain son of Mars burn himself, but as someone who was reading the meaning of sacrificing. He seems so boyish, yet somehow manly.
Total shift; I loved Frank.
